New technologies, the internet, and social media had brought a new type of bullying among young people. This new bullying type is called “cyberbullying” and refers to messages sent in an electronic way that contain threatening and intimidating information.

Youths form the biggest percentage of internet and social media usage, and therefore they face the biggest danger online. A lot of young people in Europe are victims of online violence which can cause huge consequences on their emotional, mental, and physical wellbeing.

  • Emotional consequences:

First of all, victims can feel humiliated. When cyberbullying occurs, personal information or lies about the victim can be published online, which leads to the humiliation of the victim. After feeling humiliated the victims often get isolated in order to avoid interacting with their bullies. Also, they get distanced from their loved ones, since many times it’s difficult for them to open up and share their problems. Finally, all these negative feelings and isolation lead to anger. People suffering from cyberbullying are getting mad about the situation they have been involved in, and often they turn against their bullies, their relatives, or other members of society.

  • Mental consequences:

Cyberbullying victims can get anxious and depressed, thinking that the situation they have been involved in will never end and will never get their lives back to normal. Their self-esteem is getting lower, they feel embarrassed about what is happening to them and this can lead even to suicidal and self-harm attempts.

  • Physical consequences:

All aforementioned mental and emotional issues, often lead to physical issues too. It is observed that many times cyberbullying victims, due to their anxiety suffer from gastrointestinal issues, such as ulcers, diarrhea, or vomiting. Furthermore, eating disorders is a frequent issue faced by cyberbullying victims. The reasons for cyberbullying attacks often are based on the weight or the appearance of the victim, therefore victims often suffer from bulimic or anorexic episodes.
